HISTORIC PROVENANCE

This Bust of a Youth recalls an idealized Roman head (117–161 CE) in The Met collection, sculpted during the Hadrianic or Early Antonine periods. The polished flesh, sharply defined eyes, and intricate locks of hair characterizing the original were all typical features of bronze sculpture that were imitated in marble as part of the classicizing taste that prevailed during the reign of the emperor Hadrian in the early 2nd century CE.
